For Peace and Harmony - Visiting the Peace Park in Austin
Besides other attractions, Austin is known for wide variety of parks and recreation spots. The main advantage of these parks is its free entry. Being open to general public, these parks are ideal for relaxing yourself after a hectic day at office.
Variety of activities and facilities has been provided for entertaining children. These include swimming pools, indoor and outdoor tennis courts, and music and art centers. The two most renowned and popular parks of this city include Richard Park and Meadowbrook park.
Peace memorial park in Austin is also pretty popular. The highlight of this park is its 75 foot peace symbol made of turf. The negative space in the peace symbol is filled with colorful flowers and a peace pole at the top of the circle.
The main purpose of developing and designing this park is to memorise all the victims who lost their valuable lives during every war. These victims include civilians, military pawns of foreign policy, people of Dresden, citizens of Hiroshima, Vietnamese and American victims of Agent Orange poisoning and people suffering with radiation sickness in Iraq and US.
This park has been named as "Peace memorial" instead of "War memorial" because war memorials are only dedicated to soldiers while the lives of other citizens are ignored. But peace memorial on the other hand represents the true human cost of war by including military, civilian and future generations of all sides.
We would like to conclude stating that peace memorial aims to inspire people by sharing stories as well as symbols of peace made from planting and caring living things.
