
Honor the History - Visitor's Guide to Texas State Cemetery
Texas State Cemetery is located close to the State Capitol and is the resting place for famous personalities including Congressmen, Judges, Governors, Legislators and Senators. Many legendary Texans have been buried in the ground of Texas State Cemetery. It is one of the most famous tourist destinations since this cemetery contains the graves of eminent Texan personalities.
This cemetery was established in the year 1851 and some of the famous personalities who are resting in this place include Stephen F. Austin, John Connally and Governor Allan Shivers. The Cemetery opens from 8 to 5 throughout the week and remains closed during the weekend for public viewing. Visitors can opt for guided tours for which they have to make reservations. If you wish to have a good experience then make reservations well in advance and it will be confirmed through a tour information pack and a letter.
You can take the tours from Monday to Friday from 9 to 3.30pm. More than 40 people are not allowed in a single group. The tours in Austin normally span for 1 hour. Pets as well as food and drinks are prohibited inside the cemetery. There are quite a few monuments that have been constructed on the cemetery grounds to commemorate distinguished people or events.
Some of them include Vietnam Memorial, Fallen Texans, September 11, 2001, VE/VJ Day, Purple Heart Monument, Nine Men of Praha and Gold Star Moments. There is also a monument dedicated to the recipients of Medal of Honor, which is the highest honorary award of US. This monument is known as Medal of Honor Monument. There is also a flagpole inside the cemetery for the brave soldiers who died serving their motherland.
