The Austin Independent School District (AISD) is one of the oldest and active urban school districts in the whole of the U.S. Set up in 1881, it caters to metropolitan Austin. The school district aims to provide excellence in education. Currently over 100 schools in the city are registered under the AISD. The body is governed by a board of trustees.

AISD had undergone its unique set of challenges. This is because of the large non-English speaking population owing to the wide cultural diversity within the city of Austin, which is much higher than many other cities in the U.S. This has posed a unique challenge for teachers and administrators in the region. However, true to its motto 'No child is left behind', the AISD strives to provide advanced training to teachers so that they can offer high-quality education to students and also guide high-risk students to become empowered adults.
In the recent past, the Austin Isd had tried to improve the condition of many schools in the region. These urban schools had to undergo a major expansion and renovation in terms of infrastructure and curriculum. New school campuses and a contemporary performing arts facility is also in the pipeline.

The board has recently come up with special initiatives to teach English to non-English speaking students. They have also increased parental involvement in the recent past. The other landmark achievement was to improve the pay-scale of the administrators and teachers. In the process, it is attracting and retaining highly qualified and experienced teachers in the city schools.
